Muscle Beach - Rando Bag - Bee and jacky
8/12 - doll house - eugene oregon
The first time i became aware of muscle beach was through video of their performance in Los Angeles inside a laundromat. They tore thru a set from the top of the machines as a room full of people got lost inside the sauce of their improv stylings.
I am not a fan of much guitar music, as i call it, at all.
quickly i am going to say they felt like the grateful dead but all of the greatest parts of their improv noise bits condensed with none of the annoying anything about anything anything. I felt a slight americana element as this is a band on the road from Los Angeles and one of the members cavalierly lights up a cigar as the set started.

The vocalist Jane (above) had a pedal board and to manipulate her voice thru and vocal techniques using it as an instrument, an announcement, and a texture generator. one of my favorite parts of the set was near the end when the neighbors sprinklers perfectly synced up with jane's soft soft singing with no other instruments manipulated through god knows what doohicky on the ground. two digital delays? fun.
let me explain the neighbors sprinkler and how it became a forced collab.
Me and randy (below) opened the show as "rando bag".

Here is me warming up with Neal from Muscle Beach!
We opened super heavy i blasted some triple comb filtered samples thru this little sunn pa and randy tried to follow me on his synth guitar, an invention of his.
a voice from over the fence "this is not a venue" angrily!
i was high af and in the zone and thought it was raining at first....... it was not, it was actually the second hottest day so far thanks to global warming in our pacific northwest town; 99 degrees.
people started slowly moving the pieces of community gear and pa.
The whole show was already a bunch of weird music freaks trying to make something happen against various odds.
above is a recording of our short set. be warned its heavy af.

we ended up with the pa stacked on top of the sub in the middle of the dry area.
This is the situation into which two of the members of elf freedom, and muscle beach set up in.
Muscle beach really tore a whole hole in rhythmic reality for me.
They were jamming within the song ,but within the riff, but within that moment, then moving onto a new area of sonic undulatin. If you havent seen them live yall need to!

elyza dj'd as dj e(vil) from the ground, and played a sick selection of tunes some dembow. evil and gay is what i remember.

The two members of elf freedom closed out the night with some ethereal psychedelic songs. One member on the drums with a very airy timpani type. The singer and guitarist had a mythical midi harmonica that added lucious tones to the psych freakout that ensued.
